Romeo Vermant: “Logical win“
Smiling ear to ear, Romeo Romeo Vermant headed for the press after the important win at Westerlo. “A content feeling indeed. First of all because we managed to grab the three points here, but also because it was my first spot in the Starting XI. And against the team I joined last season for a short while, the team that gave me the chance to gather some playing time at the highest level.”
Vermant was clear when it came to today's game too: “I do believe we deserved this win, as we were in full control throughout the game. We managed to make use of the space in between the lines, and made it 0-2 just thirty minutes in. After that, we made it too hard on ourselves again. But even then, we managed to play it out in a mature manner in the second half? Where we can do better? Maybe there's several things we can do better. There's a number of injured players, obviously, and we also had many international players returning, keeping us from having the best preparations. This should not come as an excuse, however, but it could be an explanation. We do realise we are not at our peak just yet, and that it's not our best football right now. But all in all I do believe Club played well a times here, making it a logical win.” (MV)
Nicky Hayen: "Should decide these games earlier on"
Three vital points for Club at Westerlo. A satisfied Club coach headed for the Mixed Zone. "I reckon we took on this game well, trying to keep them from luring on the break, retaining our fine organisation. We also tried to find the solution through football, and this proved effective. We took the lead through that long range effort by Spileers going in. After that we added a second early on, but we again made the mistake of doing other things. It just offers the other team breathing room. I think every single Westerlo chance came after a technical error on our behalf. You could say that we need to step up our pressing, but it was just technical fumbles, giving away possibilities. Then there's that goal just before half time, and you just know that you are going to have a rough second half, with them playing towards their Kop. They had their chances, but we also could have made it 1-3. We should have been more efficient in those chances for Vermant and Jutglà. Widening the gap would have allowed us to play it out more easily, but now we had to stay focused until the very last second. And there was that crucial save by Maxim De Cuyper, clearing it from the goal line, or a ball that could just as easily end up well for them. We really should decide these games much more earlier on."
Come Tuesday, AC Milan awaits. "I warned the team of keeping the focus here and not on Tuesday. Club has had trouble claiming the three points here before. Today's mission was to get those points, and in a positive way. We managed to complete that first mission. It's an important double bill, obviously, and it's only logical that you are already looking forward to Tuesday. Let's just be relieved right now and then reshift our focus on the Milan game. No matter the situation, you have to keep working hard. Adding the Anderlecht game on Sunday, I have always highlighted the importance of these games, so you can only be happy that you sailed past that first cliff. Again, it'll be a thoroughly different game on Tuesday, but the game on Sunday will be equally important, if not even more so. They lost yesterday, and they will hope to brush off against us, just like we want to continue our winning ways", Nicky Hayen concluded.
